The Cologne-based AI translation company cut about 250 of its ~1,000 staff — a quarter of its workforce — with founder and CEO Jarek Kutylowski explicitly attributing the reductions to AI and framing them as a deliberate restructuring to remain a 'global AI leader' amid intensifying competition from Google and Microsoft in AI translation.
Kutylowski: 'We are currently living through a massive structural shift in what work exists, who does it, and how many people it takes to do it well, and that shift is because of AI.'
