Cumulative jobs cut · Barclays

- Oct 22, 2026−5,000 cutMixedFinance · GB
Barclays said on October 22, alongside its Q3 results, that it would cut about 5,000 roles (~5% of its ~93,000 staff) by the end of 2026 — around 1,000 already gone in the first half. Roughly 60% are support functions, developers among them. The bank tied the cuts to organizational simplification and AI-driven efficiency gains, but CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan played down AI as the main driver ('AI is the icing on the cake, not the cake'), and the Unite union called AI 'an excuse' to shed staff. Restructuring costs run to roughly 600m pounds for 2026. Logged mixed.
CEO C.S. Venkatakrishnan: 'We will use AI at scale, but AI is the icing on the cake, not the cake.'
